Tea Time – How to order boba tea to perfection!!

Tea Time

How to order boba tea to perfection!

I love boba Tea, but that all depends on how I order it. Its a skill to be able to order boba tea to your liking and perfection! This post go’s step by step and shares my best tips to ordering boba tea. Enjoy!

*These tips are based on MY experience. And may not be applicable to you!

Step 1. Find a tasty boba place near you!

Boba Tea is a delicious drink, but the quality and experience depends on the place you go. The best places have 4-5 star ratings – always check the reviews/comments!

I researched some good boba tea shops near some of you! Here they are :):

  • CA – Pop Tea Bar or Teaspoon!
  • Oregon (portland area) – Bubble Bubble Tea!
  • Washington D.C – Kung Fu Tea!
  • New Jersey – Boba Land!
  • Ocean City, NJ – Bubble Tea and Beyond!
  • Baltimore – Teavovle!

Step 2. The perfect straws!

There are straws specially made for boba tea, so you can drink the boba and tea all at once. At the shops, they will ALWAYS give you plastic straws, but when the straws end up in the ocean, they will harm sea life and create plastic pollution!

So, we got reusable metal boba straws. Now we can enjoy boba tea without worrying about harming the environment!

Step 3. Ordering!

When you open the door to the Boba Tea place, I’m (almost) 100% positive that there will be an overload of options to choose from. SO, read the following steps to the secret of ordering perfect boba tea!

Step 4. Tea!

I love fruity teas and milk teas. If you get a fruity flavor (e.g peach, mango, strawberry) it will most likely be sweet! So, make sure you order barely any sweetness in your drink (0%-10%). For milk tea, it will be less sweet, but then you have a milky flavor tea (which personally, I don’t mind). There usually is the option of coffee too, for those of you coffee fans!

Step 5. Sweetness!

Boba Tea is a naturally sweet drink. If you don’t say how much sugar you want – the place will make it like a punch in the FACE (I’m not kidding)! So, the key to ordering sweetness is between 0% and 30%. Any more than that will taste gross!

Step 6. Ice!

Is VERY important to keep your tea cold, without being watery. At most Boba Tea places, they give you options of how much ice you want. Always choose normal/regular (around 100% or 75% depending on the place) because it will keep your drink cold but not too watery. If you get more ice than necessary, then the tea will end up being freezing and watery! If you get too little ice, the Boba Tea will be hot, unappetizing, and like a pool of flavored water.

Step 7. Boba!

There are many different kinds of boba you can get! I would suggest getting regular boba, or my favorite – honey boba. The honey boba has a little bit of sweetness to it and honey taste. I would NOT recommend popping boba because when it pops in your mouth. it is WAY too sweet! Also, you can get your drink without boba, but I would recommend trying it with the boba!

Step 8. You’re Ready!

Those are all the tips I have for ordering boba tea! Now, go up there and order your perfect boba tea!

Enjoy,

Anna C 🙂

P.S. This will be the end of the boba tea series for now 🙁 ! But sometime soon, when I find more crazy tea to try, Tea Time will be back!

Hi Anna, Thanks for the insructions on how to order BOBA Tea. I will follow them closely because I do not like things to be too sweet. As I said in an earlier reply I did find BOBA Land and it was listed in your tea reference places. It’s about 15 minutes from me in Palisade Park.Wish me luck that I won’t be like Oli but like the pups. Love Grandma N

This post is VERY helpful 🙂 I have had too many too sweet boba’s this summer, so the key to me is the sweetness order. And, if anyone out there goes to a boba shop that doesn’t allow you to adjust sweetness levels — RUN AWAY — your boba won’t be good.

Marco and I found that out the hard way yesterday 🙁

  3. Donna July 26, 2017

I hope everyone out there tries Boba this summer! It was fun getting into something new and having a “treat” to look forward to each day.

I wonder what the next obsession will be???

  4. Donna July 26, 2017

One more thing, please let us know if you’ve tried any Boba and where. It would be really fun to hear about your experiences.

    And, you get “comment” points.

Finally, even if you don’t think you’ll like the tapioca pearls, some of the drinks are really delish.

I’m confused (no surprise)… what do you mean don’t pop them? Do you just swallow the Boba or leave it in your glass? This is probably a silly question, so thank you in advance for not laughing too loudly.

OMG!! I’ll let Anna explain but we are chuckling over here. Don’t worry, in Avalon, we’ll find a place and walk you through it. The place we went to today even had Chai!!!!

Ps. We love you but Marco just said, “Aunt Debbie… she needs to know about stuff!”

      • donna July 27, 2017

ALSO — don’t feel badly. Uncle Max was completely confused about Boba. And he doesn’t understand yogurt bowls either.

You can chew or swallow the boba! The popping boba is a different kind of boba where there is juice or syrup inside that POPS in your mouth while you chew/swallow them. Normal boba doesn’t POP in your mouth, and there is no gross syrup!

  6. Max July 27, 2017

Awesome information Anna. You will need to take me to some of your favorite places. When you come to Tampa I will look some up for you as well.

  7. Isabella July 27, 2017

Thanks for the information! I think I might be up for trying boba again! You’ll have to bring me to Pop! I’ll keep this in mind and will definitely check out Teavovle (is that how you spell it??)! Thanks Anna, keep up the good work!

  8. Marco July 27, 2017

Thank you so much for this! I remember how lost I was the first time I ordered boba (I got 100%/regular sweetness and no ice)! Also, if you live in the SF Bay Area, try Boba Guys (multiple locations). They’re 100% organic and natural, and have a great tea selection. The boba there is the best, too. It is sweet and has the perfect texture. This series is awesome!

  9. Aunt Lauren July 29, 2017

I’m confused. What are boba? And what is the answer to Aunt Debbie’s question? What do you do with them?! Have you been to the Baltimore place you listed. Where were we? So many questions!

    You’ve gotten me addicted!!!

  13. Kurt August 13, 2017

I confess I don’t get the boba thing. But your post is very well done, so I’m good with all that.

    Love you,
    Dad

After all the hype I had my first taste of Boba! It reminded me of mushy sweet gummy bears. I was too afraid to order my own, so Marco and Anna were kind enough to share. Definitely need to have the proper straw. Thanks for the experience guys. Next time I’ll go all in and get my own. 😉
