Pig Scramble Protest!

Hi everyone,

This 4th of July my cousins and I protested the pig scramble. It’s still going on, and it still hasn’t changed. This post is focuses on our preparation  for the protest, and the protest itself. 🙁

Car Paint!

We wanted to get the word out to EVERYONE in San Mateo County, so we did the most logical thing we could think of…

PAINT OUR CARS!

We painted messages like: Stop the Scramble, Chase Dreams, Not Pigs, Piggy Justice, Just Say “NO”, and more on the car windows. We got reactions – some said, “The Pig Scramble is Great!” but others asked, “What do you mean by, ‘Chase Dreams, Not Pigs’?” We drove around in our pink painted car, protesting for piggy justice!

Protest signs!

After my cousins and I painted the car, it was time for signs! We painted our messages in pig-colored paint (the leftovers from the cars) and drew pig faces all over the signs. My favorite sign said PIGGY JUSTICE in bright pink letters!

The Reactions!

We drove up to the Woodside Jr. Rodeo in our painted car, wearing our “Chase Dreams, Not Pigs” shirts, topped off with pink hats with cut-out pig ears on top, and holding our signs! We had to stand 10 feet away from the Mounted Patrol’s property. Before we even got to the spot where we were supposed to stand, the smell hit us. I have no idea what the smell was but, it was 1,000 times worse than a dead animal. The suspicious thing was, that it only smelled where the protesters stood…

My cousins and I found a place to sit, and started chanting. At first it

was hesitant, then more powerful and determined. “Chase Dreams, Not Pigs!,” “Just Say NO,” “Stop The Scramble,” “Piggy Justice,” and more!

While we chanted as cars passed by, we got a few thumbs up, no reactions at all, and LOTS of negativity! Some people squealed as they drove by, some told us “There is NO point”, and to “GET A LIFE!”. A few obnoxious kids came up and harassed the protesters along with the news reporter from the Almanac.

NEWS!

The pig scramble protest got into the NEWS – The Almanac (where my article got published) and KPIX 5! In both reports my cousins and I were filmed/quoted!!

The End?

The scramble happened this year, despite all that everyone has done to prevent it. I’ve worked really hard on ALL of my pig scramble work, there have been many outcries from the community to end it, and there even was a large protest… Yet the pig scramble lives. I was and still am mad that the pig scramble happened this year and nothing anyone has done changed it! But now, I’m really disappointed. I never expected it to end this year, I don’t know what I thought would happen.

I am at a loss of what to do. So… That’s why I need your help! Please comment on what you think I should do next to prevent the scramble from happening again!

Thanks,

Anna

Hi Anna, What to do What to do. I would continue writing to groups such as the humane society and the aspca, also groups like the cub scouts, boy and girl scouts, They might be willing to join the challenge. Also any environmental group that wants our animal friends to be safe and secure. We all share the same planet and must take care of those that cannot fend for themselves. There are many battles in a war not just one. keep up the fight.. love Grandma N

Grandma! Love your ideas. So glad you’re on our side 🙂 We’re going to need your thoughts to get Pawfect Endings off the ground.

First, Anna I loved protesting with you! I do think that saying something may have made a difference for some people! I love your energy in this and my opinion on how to move forward is to keep pushing this matter! Keep your positive and uplifting spirt! Get out the word! Don’t end now! Bring this matter to the Mounted Patrol! Have a civil discussion with them! I can’t wait to hear how all of this ends out!
    Good Luck Anna,
    Love Isabella

First, love the multi-media blog. The video is so cool. Second, I think if we could make the message more public with signs, t-shirts, car paint, flyers father in advance that might help. More and more people would ask about the issue and we could reach a wider audience. In addition, since it appears that a lot of the participants are out of towners, we might need to take the issue to the county and state governments.

    Piggy Justice!

Anna – I am very proud of all your hard work. You took a stand on an important issue and clearly articulated your message. Keep up the good work – this is only the beginning! I agree with Isabella’s comments; civil discussion is the way to go. Keep getting the word out and seek the help of other caring animal groups. I know an end to the pig scramble is in the future!

    Hi Anna,

If you find out where the money is coming from then we can write it in the newspaper because the newspaper is read all around the world. The people who are going to the pig scramble are mostly coming from other places and since the newspaper goes around the world they can read it. We can get PETA involved and then the people won’t be able to sell tickets to the pig scramble anymore.

The rodeo sounds like a bad idea because people and cows get hurt.

Moo moo, thanks Julia! It’s great to hear your support.

      Hi Julia,

I agree! Most of the rodeo really does sound like a bad idea.
