Wonder by R.J. Palacio

August Pullman, who has a facial condition called Treacher Collins syndrome,  starts middle school. Treacher Collins syndrome is a condition that affects bone development and other tissues in the face.  With help from his fierce sister, loyal dog, helpful parents, and a few kind friends, August survives the first year of middle school.  Through it all, August wonders if he’s “extraordinary” like some people say or just an ordinary kid with an extraordinary face.

I read Wonder for a book club. I was asked to complete a poem from August’s point of view in the first half of the book.  My Mom liked the poem and she wanted me to post it! Here it is:

I am August,

I wonder what it is like to be normal,

I hear voices making fun of me,

I see people looking,

I want to fit in,

I am a big question mark,

I pretend not to hear the mean comments,

I feel strong, sad, and sometimes happy,

I worry about friends leaving me,

I cry about mean bullies,

I understand what I look like,

I say it’s not a big deal,

I dream about having a normal face,

I try to like school,

I hope other people will like me,

I am August Pullman.

    HI Anna,

I love this poem. I’m so glad you agreed to post it. Wonder is a very thought provoking book. The simple, clear, honest truth about the power of kindness is laid out for us and is rendered undeniable.
And, for someone who never liked poetry, you’re awfully good at it 🙂
